Walter, some interesting links and thoughts on Twitter. You have certainly been a great example of someone leveraging it's use effectively for careers.

But employees certainly need to be cautious as it was interesting to note that the Miami Dolphins and several other US football teams have banned it's use on the practice ground for fear of secret plays being 'tweleaked!'

The coach for Colorado was asked about this and basically could not answer - both through his own ignorance of social media but also because the team had no policy.

This highlights an important point - if you have a company or are responsible for communications you need to be on this NOW - set a policy and be ready to change as the technology does.

If you work for a company be mindful that just because the company has no policy does not mean you can do what you like. If you are tweeting on company time that alone may be a violation of your contract. Check and ask for guidance.

Hi Paul!

Thanks for your thoughtful comment! You’ve added important perspective about the need for caution in using Twitter. I had heard about NFL players using Twitter, but not about the ban until after you mentioned it!

It certainly is critical with any form social media that we use discretion. We need to be mindful about what we’re revealing about our companies as well as ourselves. And we need to be clear on when we’re using social media, particularly during the work day!

I think this awareness is critical for people who use Twitter, in particular. Not only because following the flow of tweets can be rather addictive – but also and especially as it’s a medium that makes it all too easy to “blurt out” information without careful consideration!

Still, with these constraints in mind, I think Twitter is a powerful medium and has a clear place in one’s career management strategy.

Best,
Walter
